In My Natural Element (at Magness Tree Farm) |

Simply stated, I enjoy going barefoot. Always have. You too, I'll bet – under the right conditions, at least. A grassy field or a plush carpet for instance. Or a white sand beach. The only difference is, I have extended the range of places where I can reasonably enjoy the experience of going barefoot.
Now, there are a lot of things I enjoy, but there are only a few that I make the effort to actively pursue. We're all that way, I suppose. Psychologists say that our decisions are "multi-determined". That is to say, most things we do are the result of many complex motivations, both conscious and unconscious. Barefootedness is one for me because it lies at a crossroads of many interests in my life. It says something about who I am, what kinds of things intrigue me. That fullness of meaning is what finally moved me from simply “liking it” to actually "doing it".
And it's dramatically improved my running, to boot (oops, pardon the inappropriate footwear metaphor!)
This website is devoted to conveying some of the enjoyment, discoveries and benefits I've gotten from going barefoot. It’s also an opportunity to share my thoughts, insights into the biomechanics of barefoot running and references for those of you who are interested in learning more. Last but not least, it also gives me free license to display a few show-off photos too!
